If you've been following the conflict in Gaza, you've seen dramatic pictures of heavily armed Israeli soldiers, their tanks and helicopters. You've seen pictures of neighborhoods reduced to rubble, with Palestinian men, women and children in desperate circumstances. What you almost certainly have not seen are the combatants Israelis have been fighting. It's as though they were fighting ghosts.

Also scarce in the major media: stories about Hamas deploying civilians as human shields, storing missiles in mosques and United Nations schools, setting up command posts in hospitals, using ambulances to ferry terrorists to battle, and employing children to dig tunnels ― with at least 160 killed in the process. How many stories have you seen about humanitarian supplies flowing from Israel to Gaza in the midst of this bloody conflict and the hundreds of Gazans treated in Israeli hospitals?

The explanation: Hamas restricts what journalists in Gaza may film, photograph and even write about. Hamas threatens and intimidates journalists who do not follow what might be called Hamas rules ― rules designed to shape media coverage and influence perceptions around the world.

The journalists covering Gaza are brave. I'm not saying they should be braver ― much less reckless. I do think they should be honest with their readers and viewers about the conditions under which they are operating; namely, conditions of coercion, manipulation, restriction and censorship.

An op-ed in The Australian noted that after TV reporter Peter Stefanovic tweeted that he had seen rockets fired into Israel from near his hotel, a pro-Hamas tweeter warned: "in WWII, spies got shot." French-Palestinian journalist Radjaa Abu Dagga was "detained and interrogated by members of Hamas' al―Qassam Brigade at a room in Shifa hospital next to the emergency room." He published an account of his treatment in the French newspaper Liberation ― but that article has since been "unpublished at Dagga's request." Why do you suppose?

I would argue, too, that never questioning Hamas' "facts" and casualty figures is not tantamount to telling the Palestinian side of the story. I would further argue that Hamas is not on the side of Palestinians ― at least not those who want normal lives for their children and whose highest priority is not exterminating the Jewish state next door.

I would just ask that principled journalists, once they are safely out of Gaza, tell the truth about the pressures they faced and the way it influenced their reportage.

가자의 분쟁을 추적해온 사람이라면 중무장한 이스라엘 군인들과 그들의 탱크 및 헬기의 극적인 사진을 익히 본다. 독자는 폐허더미로 변해 팔레스타인 남녀 주민들과 어린이들이 절망적인 상황에 처한 여러 동네의 사진도 보았다. 이스라엘 사람들과 싸우는 전투원들을 독자들이 보지 않은 것은 거의 확실하다. 마치 그들은 유령 전사들 같다.

다음과 같은 기사도 주요 언론매체에 거의 보도되지 않는다. 하마스가 민간인들을 인간방패로 배치하고 미사일을 이슬람 사원과 유엔 학교에 보관하며 병원에 사령부를 설치하고 테러분자들을 전투에 수송하기 위해 앰뷸런스를 사용하며 어린이들을 땅굴 파는 데 동원하여 그 과정에서 적어도 160명이 피살되었다. 이번 유혈 분쟁 때 이스라엘이 제공한 인도적인 보급품이 가자로 운반되고 수백 명의 가자 주민들이 이스라엘 병원에서 치료받은 사실에 관한 기사를 독자는 얼마나 보았는가.

설명은 이렇다. 하마스가 가자에서 언론인들의 필름, 사진, 기사에 제한을 가한다. 하마스는 소위 하마스의 규칙을 따르지 않는 언론인들을 위협한다. 이는 언론의 취재 형태를 정하고 전 세계적인 인식에 영향을 주기 위해 고안되었다.

가자를 취재하는 언론인들은 용감하다. 필자는 그들이 용기를 더 발휘해야 한다고 말하는 것이 아니다. 훨씬 덜 무모해야 한다. 그들은 취재활동 여건에 관해 독자들 및 시청자들에게 정직해야 한다고 필자는 생각한다. 즉 위협, 조작, 제한, 검열을 당하는 여건에 관해 정직해야 한다.

여러 발의 로켓이 자신의 호텔 부근에서 이스라엘 안으로 발사되는 광경을 보았다고 TV 기자인 피터 스테파노비치가 트윗을 한 뒤 하마스를 지지하는 한 트위터는 "2차 대전 때 스파이는 총살당했다"는 경고를 했다고 더 오스트레일리안에 실린 한 기명 기사가 지적했다. 프랑스의 팔레스타인계 언론인 라드자 아부 다가는 "시파 병원의 응급실 옆방으로 끌려가 구금된 채 하마스의 알카삼 여단 대원들에게 심문을 받았다." 그는 자신의 처우에 관한 설명을 프랑스 신문 리베라시옹에 공개했으나 기사는 "다가의 요청으로 보도되지 않았다." 무엇 때문에 보도되기를 기대하는가.

하마스가 제시하는 "사실"과 피해자 수에 결코 의문을 제기하지 않는 것이, 팔레스타인 측의 이야기를 전하는 것에 해당되지는 않는다는 주장도 필자는 하고 싶다. 또 하마스가 팔레스타인 주민들의 편이 아니라는 주장을 덧붙이고 싶다. 적어도 자녀들을 위해 정상적인 생활을 원하는 주민들과 이웃 유대 국가를 전멸시키는 것이 최우선 과제가 아닌 사람들의 편은 아니다.

원칙을 따르는 언론인들이 일단 가자에서 안전하게 벗어난 후 그들이 직면했던 압력과 그들의 보도에 영향을 준 방식에 관한 진실을 이야기하기를 필자는 요청할 뿐이다.
