Sukhothai, the ancient first capital of Thailand, prospered from the mid 13th to the late 14th century, known as the Golden Age of Thai civilization. Now the internationally recognised ruins of some 24 historical sites are tended and worshipped. Among the most famous of the eight ancient Kings of Thailand who ruled Sukhothai was Phor Khun Ramkhamhaeng, who ascended the throne in 1278 and ruled for 40 years. As one of Thailand's greatest warriors, King Ramkhamhaeng expanded territory and made Sukhothai a powerful kingdom. He is also credited as with establishing the Thai writing system.
