Those were the scenes from a peace concert near the demilitarized zone earlier this month. It certainly sent out a strong message and briefly healed the wounds of the divided Korean Peninsula.

Moments like these. you want to remember. And these days they can be stored easily by using your. They even allow for easy editing and uploading on the web... so with this... anyone can become a Spielberg or a Cameron now. In fact, we're witnessing a growing number of people here in Korea making movies with their smart phones, that the trend is even changing the way movies are filmed, distributed and promoted. The smart phone movie in Korea... is our next item.

Location - Director Chan-Uk Park's <nightfishing="">set. But something doesn't seem right. The film set feels empty - there are no intimidating cameras around, instead all you see is a small, fist-sized smart phone.

<nightfishing="">

[I'm just filming a movie like I always do, expect I'm working with a smaller camera.]

<nightfishing="">is the world's first smart phone movie to win an international film festival award - the prestigious Golden Bear Award for best short film. It's also the first smart phone film to be screened in a movie cinema.

<nightfishing="">

[I believe Korea was the first country to ever shoot a movie using a handset and we've seen great strides and achievements in this area. Not only is Korea a leader in the IT industry, but we furthermore see Korea as a leader in smart phone filmmaking.]

[Ahn Hyunmo / SBS CNBC]Who would have imagined that film makers would one day be using smart phones to generate movies, and be successful at that? Yet this year's short film, <nightfishing="">transformed a mere $150,000 into an astounding $200 million of marketing revenue using just this little device. Simply put, individual smart phone users had merely adventured on the tip of this technological iceberg - now, the movie industry is delving deeper, with Korea in the lead of this phenomenon. Let's take a peek into this fascinating, new development.

<nightfishing="">

This year, 26 smart phone films have premiered in theaters including at film festivals. And that's sparked the world's first smart phone movie festival in Korea. The budget of the festival's winner was an approximate $200 to $300. That's really turning this industry on its head, Given that the average low-budget independent films spends at least ten times as much - from anywhere between $2000 to $5000. More than anything else, phones are paving a new path for hopeful directors who want to achieve their dreams.

Riding on the wave of this smart phone movie craze, related companies are now offering smart phone movie production courses. People attending the classes are mostly college students, working men and women, and stay-at-home wives, average people like you and I.

[Being a student and unfamiliar with technological terms, I was worried the class would be difficult to understand. But thanks to the instructor's kind explanation, I really learned a lot.]

From filming, editing to delivery, these students learn the overall basics of creating a smart phone movie.

[I came here because I wanted to know the inside scoop on smart phone movie filming, from equipment to particular techniques.]

Not only are smart phones reshaping how movies are made; they are impacting how movies are circulated as well.

Take the QR Code Film Festival as an example. The festival which debuted last July did not require people to search for a movie theater or book a ticket in order to attend. All you needed was to go up to a movie poster and scan the QR code printed on it with your smart phone.

[30% of the production cost of recent movies is going to marketing, which is a little burdensome for producers and distributors. However, smart media tools like QR code is helping them achieve great PRs at little costs.]

A number of film festivals in Korea have also recognized smart phone movies as a fresh, stand-alone genre of art, establishing an additional category in competitions.

[I don't believe digital movies will ever stop developing. I first became curious about this smart phone because it is not only a camera, but also a theater in and of itself. And I wanted the Cindi Film Festival to trigger the same kind of curiosity to people. So this year, the event took its first steps into this type of movie genre.]

But how are audiences reacting?

[I liked it because the fact that anyone can easily film and distribute his or her very own smart phone movie really came home to me.]

As part of the film festival, one of the directors spent some time with an audience, describing the production process of smartphone movies. There he shared the beauty of directing films with a smartphone such the amazingly short time frame some moves are produced in just 48 hours - and fast distribution.

[I guess making movies with smart phones will be useful if you're working on a tight budget or if you want to portray a story more freely and simply want a more artistic focus.]

Experts in the movie industry believe this new variety of movie is going to open up more possibilities and revenue sources.

[With a smart phone, you're guaranteed mobility. That's why the form has a potential to change the ways in which people consume movies, eliminating the problem of illegal movie downloading that's especially troublesome in Korea. Also, it is expected to serve as a channel to the entire movie industry whereby it can grow the pie.]

[Ahn Hyunmo / SBS CNBC]As the saying goes, a new era has dawned - an era of smart phones - where anyone can produce and broadcast their own movie through their very own fingertips. With this boom of innovation, going to movie theaters may soon fade away and become a trend of the past. With our new, cutting-edge technology, the future only looks brighter as this avant-garde trend spreads out into the world.
